Having a garden isn’t about making the neighbors jealous. It’s your own slice of calm.

A garden gives you somewhere to chill after work, adds value to your home, and creates an amazing backdrop for making memories.

Here, in this post, we’re walking through how to upgrade my garden homemendous.

I’ll show you everything from figuring out what your garden needs, to picking the right plants, adding furniture, lighting, and the personal touches that make it feel like YOU.

About Homemendous

About Homemendous

This website is the best when it comes to garden makeovers.

They’re not about the fancy, impossible-to-maintain magazine gardens that nobody has time for.

Homemendous is all about realistic changes that work with YOUR life.

They don’t only focus on making things pretty but they’re big on making sure your garden works with nature.

Like using plants that don’t need much water, or figuring out how to keep pests away without putting chemicals.

The whole approach is about balance, they help you create a garden that looks amazing.

They’re good at showing how small changes can completely change your garden.

How to Upgrade my Garden Homemendous: Transform your Garden

Alright, let’s get to the stuff. Transforming your garden doesn’t have to mean changing everything and starting again.

Sometimes the small changes make the big difference.

Here’s how to upgrade my garden Homemendous way which has smart ideas that won’t out of the budget or spending a lot.

Evaluate the Space

I spent one whole day walking around my garden with a notebook and it was helpful.

I wrote down which areas were sunny, shady, where water collected after rain, and which spots looked sad and empty.

Take pictures from different angles too like it’s different how seeing your garden in a photo can highlight problems without noticing.

According to Home & Garden Magazine, most homeowners try to fix the wrong problems because they don’t properly assess their space first.

Maintain Soil Quality

Testing your soil is easy like you can grab a kit from any center.

Once you know what you’re working with, you can fix it.

Most gardens need a good layer of compost mixed in.

I added about 2 inches of compost to my flower beds last spring, and the difference was amazing. My plants doubled in size.

Don’t forget to loosen compacted soil.

My neighbor uses a garden fork to poke holes all over her lawn and beds in spring.

Refresh Garden Border or Beds

Clean, fresh edges make ANY garden look polished. Using some edging material is a game-changer.

You can go fancy with stone or brick, or keep it simple with the metal edges that sink into the ground.

Having a clear line between grass and garden beds makes everything look neat.

Try creating curved edges instead of straight lines, it adds a lovely, flowing feel to your garden.

I redid my front flower bed edges last summer with simple brick edging laid in a curve, and it made a difference.

Repair Pathways or Patios

If your pathways are looking tired, sometimes a good washing is all you need. It’s kind of fun.

For big issues like uneven pavers or cracked concrete, you need to reset some sections.

My old brick pathway was a tripping hazard until I spent a weekend lifting the bricks, adding fresh sand underneath, and putting them back.

Country Living suggests that updating pathways gives you the big visual impact for the least amount of work in garden upgrades.

Upgrade the Plants and Pots

Don’t feel like you need to replace EVERYTHING.

Sometimes adding a few statement plants in key spots makes a difference.

Like the plants that look good all year like evergreens, ornamental grasses, or shrubs with bark or berries.

My favorite trick is grouping pots together instead of scattering them around.

Three pots of different heights with the same type of plant looks more put-together than random containers.

Use Furniture and Decor

You don’t need fancy outdoor furniture sets.

But a simple bench under a tree creates a destination in your garden.

My friend hung an old wooden ladder horizontally on her fence, painted it turquoise, and used it to display potted herbs. It costs nothing but looks amazing.

Garden art doesn’t have to be expensive.

I found an old metal watering can at a yard sale, spray painted it bright yellow, and stuck it among my flowers. It adds a perfect pop of color and personality.

Incorporate Lighting for Ambiance

Lighting is MAGIC in a garden because it completely transforms the space when the sun goes down.

Solar lights are my favorite because there’s no wiring involved.

Remember to stick with them in the ground and let the sun do the work.

I lined my pathway with solar lights, and now I use my garden in the evenings too.

String lights are another preference too.

I zigzagged some over my patio last summer, and now it feels like this magical outdoor room at night.

According to Architectural Digest, garden lighting is the number one thing homeowners they’d added soon.

Consider Water Feature and Sculpture

You don’t need a fancy in-ground pond either.

The simple solar fountains you can put in a big pot work well.

I added a small one in a ceramic pot on my patio, and the splashing sound covers up noise and attracts birds.

For sculptures, my neighbor repurposed an old bicycle, painted it white, added flower baskets to the front and back, and propped it against her fence.

It’s charming and tells a story and is more interesting than the garden statues.

Make Seasonal Changes

Your garden should never be complete but it should change and evolve like your home decor with the seasons.

Small seasonal touches make your garden feel alive and cared for.

In spring, I go for bulbs and bright colors.

Summer is all about lush, full plants and green. In fall, I add pumpkins, ornamental cabbage, and mums.

Even in winter, I make sure there’s something interesting to look at with evergreens, berry-producing shrubs, and outdoor holiday decorations.

Maximize Space with Vertical or Container Gardening

Vertical gardening isn’t only for small spaces but it adds an amazing dimension to ANY garden.

You can use trellises, wall planters, hanging baskets, or repurposed items like old shutters mounted on a fence with small pots attached.

I turned an old wooden pallet into a vertical herb garden on my patio wall.

It doesn’t take up any floor space but gives me fresh herbs in the summer.

Plus, it looks cool with the different textures and shades of green.

Add Personalisation with DIY

DIY touches add personality.

My favorite project was taking smooth rocks from the beach, painting them with the names of herbs, and using them as markers in my herb garden.

They cost nothing and make me smile every time I see.

Another easy DIY is I took an old window frame from a thrift store, hung it on my fence, and attached flower pots along the bottom “windowsill.”

It looks like a magical window into another garden.

Martha Stewart says that personal touches in gardens are what visitors remember, it’s not the perfect plants or fancy hardscaping.

Conclusion

We’ve covered many ways of how to upgrade my garden Homemendous way.

The best part is you don’t have to do everything together.

Start with the basics like fix your soil, clean up your edges, add some new plants or lighting.

Remember what makes Homemendous special is that perfect balance of practical, pretty, and planet-friendly.

Your upgraded garden should be a space you USE, not only to look at from the window.

These 11 ideas of how to upgrade my garden homemendous will guide you to mix the modern touch with low maintenance strategies and will look the best slowly, and you’ll be amazed at how different your outdoor space feels after this because it will make your space worth looking at.
