Learning how to be better at interior design mintpaldecor style isn’t just about making your place look pretty.

Most of us want our homes to look amazing, but figuring out how to get there can feel like trying to solve a puzzle blindfolded.

Mintpaldecor stands out from other design platforms because they focus on what’s actually doable for real people with real budgets.

In this post, we’re going to walk through some game-changing interior design tips from Mintpaldecor that’ll help transform your space.

We’ll cover everything from figuring out your personal style to choosing the right lighting, and practical advice on what’s actually worth spending money on.

Ready to make your home look like you hired a pro? Let’s jump in.

About Mintpaldecor and how it works?

Black and white concrete made house with glass doors and a pool at side with plants around

Mintpaldecor started as a small design blog and grew into this amazing resource hub for people who want designer-looking homes without the designer price tag.

The concept is pretty straightforward – they provide super actionable design advice through their website, social media, and virtual consulting services.

What makes them different? They break everything down into bite-sized steps that normal humans can actually follow.

Their online quizzes help you nail down your style preferences.

Getting better at interior design isn’t about memorizing complicated rules or trends.

It’s about training your eye to notice what works and why.

Mintpaldecor’s approach focuses on building your confidence through small wins.

You’ll learn to trust your instincts while picking up practical skills along the way.

The key is starting with some basics and then building on that foundation.

Each of these tips builds on the others, so by the end, you’ll have a complete toolkit for creating spaces you love.

Basic Understanding of Interior Design

Interior design isn’t rocket science, but there are a few basics worth knowing.

First up – the rule of thirds.

This just means visually dividing your space into a grid of 9 squares and placing important stuff along those lines.

Sounds fancy, but it’s super simple once you try it!

Balance is another biggie. You don’t want all your heavy furniture pushed to one side of the room.

That feels weird, like wearing two different shoes.

Then there’s scale, which is just making sure your stuff fits your space. A tiny lamp on a huge table looks silly.

Identify your Personal Style

Do you keep saving rooms with cozy textiles? Lots of plants? Clean lines? Bold colors?

Your style probably has a name, but who cares what it’s called? The point is finding what makes you happy.

Mintpaldecor has this fun trick where you pick your top 5 images and list 3 words that describe each one.

The words that show up most often? That’s your style of language.

Most people are a mix. I’m part modern coastal theme farmhouse, part boho plus rustic, with a splash of mid-century like Japandi theme. It’s my design cocktail.

Your style will evolve, too. The goal isn’t perfection – it’s creating spaces that feel authentically you.

Understand the Color Scheme

Colors can make or break a room. No pressure, right?

Start with the 60-30-10 rule.

Your main color takes up about 60% of the room (usually walls and large furniture).

A secondary color takes up 30% (maybe accent chairs or curtains).

And your accent color is the final 10% (pillows, art, small decor).

Neutral walls give you flexibility to change things up seasonally.

Mintpaldecor suggests picking colors from something you already love – maybe a rug or artwork. Nature is also a perfect inspiration.

You can always choose dark furniture as it works with any color scheme.

When in doubt, go a shade lighter than you think.

Learn Tricks of Space Planning

Space planning is just fancy talk for where to put your stuff.

The number one mistake people make? Pushing ALL the furniture against the walls.

Mintpaldecor recommends starting with the largest piece first (usually your sofa) and then building around it.

Try the “sticky note method” – cut out paper templates of your furniture and move them around on your floor before breaking a sweat actually moving things.

And please measure your doorways before buying furniture.

I have a friend who had to remove her apartment door to get her couch inside.

Layered Lighting Method

Lighting can make even cheap furniture look expensive.

Or make expensive furniture look terrible.

You need three types of lighting: ambient (overall room brightness), task (for specific activities like reading), and accent (to highlight cool features or create mood).

Most rooms are way under-lit. Mintpaldecor recommends at least 3-5 light sources per room.

Don’t forget about natural light! Clean your windows (seriously) and use window treatments like tab top curtains, sheer curtains, blackout, and grommet curtains. That can be fully opened during the day.

A well-placed mirror can bounce light around and make a room feel twice as bright.

Purpose of decorating

Decorating isn’t just about making things pretty. As it has huge impact on our health and mood too.

It’s about making your home work better for you. Ask yourself what you actually do in each room.

Do you work from home? Do you entertain? Do you have kids or pets?

Mintpaldecor suggests making a list of your daily pain points. Display things that have meaning to you.

Every room should have something that makes you smile when you see it.

Remember that the purpose of your home is to support your life, not to impress the delivery person.

What furniture or decor pieces to invest in

Not everything needs to be expensive, but some things are worth the splurge.

Mintpaldecor recommends investing in “bones” and saving on accessories.

Good bones = sofa, bed, dining table.

Things you can save on = pillows, art, side tables.

Natural materials generally age better than synthetic ones.

Quality doesn’t always mean expensive.

Check secondhand shops and Facebook Marketplace for solid wood pieces at fraction of retail price.

Save up for one good thing rather than filling your home with mediocre stuff.

Keep learning and practising

Design skills get better with practice, just like anything else.

Try low-risk projects first. Rearrange furniture. Paint a small wall. Style your coffee table.

Borrow design books from the library. The good ones explain principles, not just trends.

Start a design journal where you paste inspiration and note what you like about each image.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes! I once painted my bathroom a color I can only describe as “angry salmon.”

Conclusion

How to be better at interior design mintpaldecor style isn’t about following rigid rules or spending tons of money.

It’s about understanding the basics, choosing colors that speak to you, layering your lighting, decorating with purpose, and continuously learning.

These simple shifts can transform how your home looks and feels.

What I love about Mintpaldecor’s approach is how they make design accessible to everyone.

They understand that your home should be a reflection of YOU – not a carbon copy of a magazine spread.

Their practical tips and realistic advice help bridge the gap between Pinterest dreams and actual living.

By focusing on intentional choices rather than perfection, they guide you toward creating spaces that not only look good but feel right.
