You guys, I can’t tell you how excited I am to share these dinosaur room ideas with you today! As a mom who’s designed countless kids’ spaces over the years, I’ve seen first hand how a themed room can absolutely light up a child’s imagination. And let’s be honest, what kid doesn’t go through a dinosaur phase?

My little one was obsessed with dinosaurs for nearly three years straight. He always used to talk about dinosaurs like he would suddenly come and tell me some random dinosaur name that I wouldn’t even understand. As he got more into dinosaurs, we decided to give him a dinosaur-themed room.

After transforming our spare bedroom into a prehistoric paradise last year, I learned so much about what works and what doesn’t. So grab a cup of coffee, and let’s dive into 18 roar-some dinosaur room ideas that’ll have your kiddos stomping with joy!

18 Dinosaur Room Ideas For Your Kids That They Will Love

The trick is balancing fun dino elements with practical features that grow with your child. Think beyond the obvious plastic toys and cartoon characters—natural colors, subtle prehistoric touches, and multi-functional pieces create a room that sparks imagination while still feeling put-together.

Whether you’re working with a tiny bedroom or a spacious playroom, these dino-mite ideas will transform any space into an amazing dinosaur room for your children.

Get a Dino Neon Sign

A green neon dinosaur shape sign

One of my absolute favourite additions to our dinosaur room makeover was a custom neon sign! We found this amazing T-Rex outline sign on Etsy that gives off the coolest glow at night.

The green neon against the wall creates this magical, cave-like vibe that my son absolutely loves for bedtime. It’s bright enough to work as a night light but not so bright that it keeps him awake.

Installation was super easy too—it came with all the mounting hardware and hooks. Just make sure you place it high enough so curious little hands can’t reach the cord!

A dinosaur bedside table lamp

Right next to our little one’s bed, we added this adorable dinosaur lamp that has honestly become the star of the room. It’s this cute little triceratops with a shade that has dinosaur silhouettes that cast shadows on the wall when lit up!

We originally had a basic lamp from Target, but this themed one makes bedtime stories so much more magical. The lampshade casts these amazing dino shadows all around the room.

What I love most is the warm light it gives off—perfect for winding down at night without being too stimulating. And it’s got this handy touch sensor base so even little hands can turn it on and off easily.

Dinosaur duvet set

The bed is literally the biggest piece of furniture in any kid’s room, so the bedding makes a huge impact! We went with this amazing volcano and dinosaur duvet cover that has T-Rex, Triceratops, and Pterodactyls on it.

I was worried it might look too busy, but paired with solid green sheets and a neutral pillowcase, it actually looks super cute and not overwhelming at all.

The best part? It’s 100% cotton, which is so important for kids with sensitive skin. We’ve washed it probably 20 times now, and the colors are still vibrant.

Dino theme posters to hang

Three wooden framed dinosaur painted poster above a wooden cabinet

Wall art makes such a big difference, and dinosaur posters are an easy win! We hung a set of 6 educational dinosaur prints that not only look cute but actually teach my son something too. You can even add tapestries they are also easy to put and removable option for the themed rooms.

I found these amazing vintage-style dinosaur science posters that show different species with their names and cool facts. They look like something straight out of a natural history museum!

Instead of just taping them up, we put them in simple wooden frames. It instantly made them look way more expensive and pulled together. And such ideas are good for art room too where you can hang the posters made by your kid.

Dinosaur-inspired wall decals

OK, can we talk about wall decals for a minute? These things are absolute magic for renters or commitment-phobes like me!

You can get stickers that you can put on the ceiling with these peel-and-stick dinosaur shape stickers.

You can find these sets, like a mix of dinosaurs, volcanoes, palm trees, and even little clouds. The coolest part is that you can arrange them however you want—you can create this whole scene where it looks like dinosaurs are walking through a jungle.

And when your kids eventually move on from dinosaurs, they peel right off without damaging the paint. Win-win!

Themed wallpaper as a backdrop

For the wall behind the bed, we went all out with dinosaur wallpaper and WOW, what a difference it made! It transformed the room into “cute dinosaur accents.”

I was nervous about wallpaper after some bad experiences in our old house, but these new peel-and-stick options are nothing like the wallpaper nightmares of the past. We found this amazing pattern with dinosaur figures printed on it.

We only did one accent wall to keep the room from feeling too busy. The wallpaper actually has this cool textured feel that makes it look like real stone.

Hang dinosaur-printed curtains

Navy blue curtains and white dinosaur printed on it

Light control is super important in kids’ rooms, and curtains take up a lot of visual space, so they’re perfect for adding to your theme without cluttering shelves or floors.

We found these awesome dino-print blackout curtains that have tiny dinosaur silhouettes on a dark blue background. From far away, they look almost like a sophisticated polka dot, but up close—surprise! Tiny dinos! You can hang sheer curtains too if your room look  a bit too overdone with themed curtains.

The blackout feature was non-negotiable for us since our little guy is a light sleeper. These keep his room nice and dark for naps and help him sleep past sunrise in the summer.

Get a theme-based headboard

Wall mounted cartoon printed dinosaur headboard frame

This project took a bit more effort, but it made such an incredible statement! We transformed a basic wooden headboard into a dinosaur mountain scene with some creativity and paint.

We started with a plain wooden headboard. Then, we sketched a mountain outline and painted it dark green. Once that dried, we added lighter green silhouettes of dinosaurs along the ridge.

The whole project cost maybe $30 total and took a weekend afternoon. Now it looks like dinosaurs are roaming across a prehistoric landscape right above the bed!

Dino printed storage bins

A white and black dino cartoon made storage bin for kids room

Storage is always a challenge in kids’ rooms, so why not make it fun? We replaced boring bins with these fabric dinosaur print storage cubes that fit perfectly in his existing shelf unit.

I found these cute fabric bins with different dinosaur patterns—some with T-Rex, others with fossils or footprints.

They’re all in coordinating colors but with different patterns which makes the shelf look interesting but still cohesive.

These bins hold everything from small toys to socks to art supplies. My son knows that “T-Rex bin is for cars” and “the green bin is for art stuff.” It’s made cleanup time so much easier!

Glow-in-the-dark paste on stickers

Glow-in dark neon color wall paste on stickers pasted on white wall

This was possibly the biggest hit of all our dino room additions! We put glow-in-the-dark dinosaur stickers all over his ceiling, and bedtime has never been more exciting.

We found these awesome stickers that charge up during the day and then glow this cool blue-green color at night. They look like dinosaur constellations on his ceiling!

The package came with different sizes and species, and we arranged them to look like they’re walking across the ceiling. Some of the flying ones we put swooping down the walls.

Dinosaur-based rug

Green and white rug and a white wooden crib in the kids room

A good rug ties the whole room together, and we found this circular dinosaur play mat that works as both decor and a play space.

The rug has this detailed prehistoric landscape printed on it, with volcanoes, rivers, and jungle areas. It’s basically a ready-made play scene for dinosaur toys! Rugs are a good way of adding that character to any themed room, like a Toy Story theme room, a Pokemon themed room and many more like these.

The colors match our room palette perfectly, with greens, browns, and touches of red for the volcanoes. It’s become the central gathering spot in the room for playtime.

Theme-based plush toys

Light brown fur stuff toys and kids playing with them

Let’s be real—kids’ rooms need soft, cuddly things! We added a collection of dinosaur stuffed animals that double as decor when they’re not being played with.

Instead of random stuffies everywhere, we chose ones in colors that complement the room—mostly greens, browns, and one statement red T-Rex that sits on his bed.

We found this adorable Triceratops that’s almost pillow-sized, and it’s become his favorite bedtime buddy. There’s also a long-necked Brachiosaurus that sits on a high shelf like it’s eating from the top of a tree.

A dinosaur-themed kids’ tent

White play tent and green color dino printed on it

One of the best additions to the room has been this dinosaur play tent that creates a cozy reading nook and private space all in one.

We found this amazing teepee-style tent with dinosaur print fabric. It was fairly simple to set up—just some wooden poles and fabric that tie together. Inside, we added a bunch of pillows and a small bookshelf.

Dino mobile to hang above the bed

A wooden mobile frame and shaped of cloud and dinosaur hanging on it

For a touch of whimsy, we hung a dinosaur mobile above the bed that creates the coolest shadows when the bedside lamp is on.

This was actually a DIY project that turned out better than expected! We bought a plain mobile frame and then cut dinosaur shapes out of lightweight cardboard. After painting them in coordinating colors, we hung them at different heights.

The moving shadows on the wall at bedtime are magical. Sometimes we shine a flashlight up at them to make giant dinosaur shadows on the ceiling!

Add a mini dinosaur wooden set

Multi colored dinosaur shapes on a wooden shelves as a display for kids room

For a touch of natural material among all the bright colors, you can add a beautiful wooden dinosaur puzzle set that sits on the bookshelf when not in use.

I saw a this handcrafted wooden set has five dinosaurs that fit together like puzzle pieces. When they’re not being played with, they stand up on shelf like little sculptures.

They were a bit of a splurge from a local craft fair, but quality wooden toys are totally worth the investment.

Add dinosaur toys to the play zone

A dino zone play set and kids playing with it

Of course, every dinosaur room needs actual dinosaurs to play with! We created a dedicated play area with a mix of realistic and playful dinosaur figurines.

Rather than having plastic toys scattered everywhere, we designated a corner with a small play table and bins specifically for dinosaur play. The table has this cool volcanic scene painted on it where the dinos can hang out.

We mixed some scientifically accurate models for the budding paleontologist with some more cartoonish, colorful ones that are easier for small hands to manipulate.

Colour Palette for the dinosaur theme room

Choosing the right colors made all the difference in creating a cohesive dinosaur room that doesn’t feel overwhelming or too childish.

We painted three walls in a warm tan and one accent wall in a deeper green. This combination feels earthy and natural but still bright enough for a kid’s space. These colour palettes can work for both girls and boys rooms too, and work for any theme, such as a fairy theme and many like these.

The neutral base also means we can easily update elements as he grows without repainting the entire room. Smart planning for a theme that might evolve over time!

Try a DIY art to add that personal touch

Frames with dino toys cut out pasted on it

Nothing makes a themed room feel special like personalised art, so we created some simple dinosaur canvas paintings together as a family art project.

We bought three small canvases and painted each one a different solid color from our room palette. Then we found simple dinosaur silhouettes online, printed and cut them out as stencils.

These hang in a row above his dresser, and he loves telling visitors which one he made and which ones mommy and daddy created. It’s personal art with meaning, not just store-bought decor.

Conclusion

What I love most about how the dinosaur room ideas turned out is that it’s fun and themed but not so childish that it’ll need a complete overhaul in a year or two. The neutral base colors, quality materials, and mix of educational and playful elements mean this room can grow with him.

If you’re planning your own dinosaur room, my biggest tip is to start with the big impact items like the bedding, an accent wall, and maybe one statement piece like the neon sign or play tent. You can always add smaller details over time as your budget allows.

Our dinosaur room has become the most-used space in our house for play dates, reading time, and even family movie nights, camped out on the floor. These dinosaur room ideas are perfect for creating a space that sparks joy and imagination for your child is always worth the effort!
